At Design Interviews

(Excerpt) Interview with Luca Matta : Frank Scott: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?. Luca Matta : The main inspiration was the design of the screw of Archimedes. The 'evolution of this project has changed the world in the field of mechanical engineering and construction. the Archimede phrase "geve me a lever / light and, i will move / enlighten the world" is surely is that better suited to this type of project. .Frank Scott: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?. Luca Matta : The main objective was to create a lot of "evolved families” of lights, or better, to create between a light and the other a perfect continuity and harmony in lighting. .Frank Scott: What are your future plans for this award winning design?. Luca Matta : I'd like to implement in the thought and the project is currently made only in the abstract on paper and I hope that some company is interested in making my product .Frank Scott: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?. Luca Matta : To create this type of geometry it took me a few minutes, but the work more hard was to "adapt" the geometric shape to a product that must operate, particularly illuminating, and has to be sold .Frank Scott: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?. Luca Matta : It was a project still in the drawer for more than 5 years. Now I hope that this project will take the flight and could have a good success. .Frank Scott: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?. Luca Matta : I wish that this product was acquired, understood and engineered by a serious company, able to produce it and market it without changing the nature of the lamp. .Frank Scott: What made you design this particular type of work?. Luca Matta : The passion, the tenacity and the challenge. A well-known Italian writer Vittorio Alfieri said: "I wanted always wanted, I wanted very strongly", this means that if any person has a strong will can go everywhere. .Frank Scott: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?. Luca Matta : No, there aren’t any other designer that helped the influence the design of my work. .Frank Scott: Who is the target customer for his design?. Luca Matta : Fontana Arte, Luce Plan, I think they are the companies that come closest to my style. .Frank Scott: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?. Luca Matta : What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts is the evolution of form. .Frank Scott: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?. Luca Matta : I try to forget the computer and mobile phone, listening to great music .... I always work at first by hand. Only after I realized what kind of shape I can give to the product, I begin to use the mouse and to process my project with computer. In the end, but not always, I make a small model to understand the 'ergonomics and' visual impact that can have the product. .Frank Scott: What is the most unique aspect of your design?. Luca Matta : The playful- functional aspect, a product does not talk to me if it does not say anything. Alberto Munari great teacher, for example, taught us to listen to children, who know nothing about design, yet they are an inexhaustible source of creativity. .Frank Scott: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?. Luca Matta : I’ve realized this project by myself. .Frank Scott: What is the role of technology in this particular design?. Luca Matta : Perhaps the OLED technology, but I'm not sure yet. But because of excessive costs I will adopt the OLED technology. One limitation of OLED technology is that it’s already old. The next year it should be marketed the new quantum dot technology that it’s less expensive and more performant than the OLED technology. .Frank Scott: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?. Luca Matta : I did not know what type of lighting technology applied to the lamp, was truly a feat! .Frank Scott: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?. Luca Matta : I knew it .[ End of Excerpt: Read complete interview with Luca Matta on Evolution Light at design-interviews.com ]
